A REASON FOR A SMALL TOWN TO

"Jubilee is firstly Billy Williams' story. He's hopeless, but not a loser--the type of guy who's likable and always volunteering to help out, but actually never finishes a thing. Then Billy gets the job of organising the Waimatua School 75th Jubilee. Along the way he realises people never really expected him to organise this thing, and this comes as a bit of shock to Billy. It galvanises him into absolutely trying to do it, but fate intercedes and he gets obstruction after obstruction. Eventually he pulls it together. "At the same time his wife Pauline is going through a bit of a mid-life crisis. She's not only sick of Billy being so useless, she's also scared about people coming back to town for the Jubilee and seeing that she's never done anything with her life. So the story's essentially Billy's marriage versus Billy's struggle to get the Jubilee off the ground. "I think Jubilee is a love story, and it's unashamedly warm. I'm not scared of emotions and we go for that in this film. It's also genuinely funny. It's a comedy of situation, predicament and character. It's predominantly Kiwi humour and more particularly, Maori humour, but it will have international appeal because it's so human". -Michael Hurst |
